The Distributed Systems Lab is located at the OST Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland.
We focus on applied research that combines cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and strong engineering across all aspects of distributed systems, including the latest AI tooling and decentralized systems such as blockchains. We value open communication between industry, institutions, start-ups, and students.
The DSL lab is striving to expand the frontier of innovation in this field by fostering productive discussion and collaboration, supplemented with ground-breaking applied scientific progress.

Challenge Task Winner Distributed Systems FS26
(2026-06-01) Congratulations 🎉 to the FS26 challenge task winner of the distributed systems lecture. In this semester, 70 students participated in this challenge, with the help of AI tools to build a web-based prototype meeting requirements for load balancing with failover, containerization, JWT authentication, and persistent storage. And the winner is: Joris Hänseler.
He built a real-time distributed Kahoot-style quiz platform with WebRTC video on a self-hosted Kubernetes cluster
Challenge Task Winner Blockchain HS25
(2025-12-15) Congratulations 🎉 to the HS25 challenge task winner of the Blockchain lecture at the Ostschweizer Fachhochschule. In this semester, 8 groups participated in this challenge, with the requirement to design, build and implement a gasless web3 application. And the winning group is: Lenny Merlo und Jovin Risch.
They built VOTE-V3, a gasless e-voting prototype within a potential E-ID use-case. They used React frontend with Vite, Alchemy for ERC 4337 account abstraction, Hardhat for smart contract development and deployment on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet.
Challenge Task Winner Distributed Systems FS25
(2025-06-02) Congratulations 🎉 to the FS25 challenge task winner of the Distributed Systems lecture at the Ostschweizer Fachhochschule. In this semester, 21 groups participated in this challenge, with the requirement to design and implementation of a distributed system with Server-Sent Events (SSE) where a service instance can fail. And the winning group is: Roman Weber and Ramon Bister.
They created a stablecoin EduCDN, an educational content delivery network to provides hands-on experience in CDN concepts.
